| The
Beginning
We have used the
year 1965 in which Dr. Joe King served and
organized the Wingaersheek Yacht Club (WYC) as our
first Commodore as the birth of the WYC.
The Wingaersheek
Yacht Club was formed for the children of the
beach to learn sailing and enable them to race
other yacht clubs in local regattas as a bona
fide yacht club. That goal was actively
implemented with sailing classes that Betty
Ramsey had initiated before the WYC existed.
They continued in the first year.
Sections
Unite!
Beside serving the
children, perhaps a more lasting and significant
effect was what the WYC accomplished in bringing
the various sections of the beach together.
In the early
sixties the sections of the beach often were not
talking to each other. Each section felt
isolated from the other and were highly suspicious
of one another. Very few knew their neighbor
over the "section" wall. Those
suspicions vaporized once we got to know one
another and worked toward a common objective
together, a yacht club.
Secret
of Our Success
After the WYC was
first formed and we had run through the early
participants as officers and directors, we were
concerned who was to carry on the
"tradition." We shouldn't have
worried. The beach has a tremendous
reservoir of talent as shown by the 13 commodores,
plus the officers, their spouses, and directors,
that had brought the club to its 25th anniversary
celebration in 1990. So many have supported
the club quietly and financially. To this
day the club continues to have dedicated
leadership to ensure that quality programs are
available to its members. |
